The plunger can get sticky with age. Aeropress says this is the sticky excretion from the seal is a combination of coffee oils and mineral oils that leach out of seals that have been unused for awhile. They say it can be cleaned, but is difficult. I just bought this replacement, and it fits, is easy to install, and works perfectly. I bought my Aeropress many years ago, so replacing this key piece seems reasonable and costs a fraction of buying a new one, when all the other parts are still fine.
